Curators of
ancient art usually approach the question “who owns the past?” from the
perspective of acquisitions and repatriation, i.e. legal and ethical dimensions
of ownership. In this lecture, Phoebe Segal, Mary Bryce Comstock Curator of
Greek and Roman Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, will employ a different line of
inquiry, one that considers metaphorical and symbolic aspects of the question.
Every generation reinterprets and thereby comes to “own” the past through their
own eyes. Dr. Segal will present several projects that illustrate how museums
can activate the past and empower visitors to reclaim it as their own by
focusing on issues relevant to the average person today.

This lecture is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by the Honors Program, Department of History, and Depart of Art and Art History.
