Chinese
people invented the umbrella thousands of years ago. The
Chinese character “umbrella” (傘-san) hasn’t changed much in form since ancient time.
The process was further standardized and simplified later using paper, bamboo,
thread and tung oil – a natural water repellent from the nuts
of tung tree. Mr. Liufu Bi of the town
of Fenshui in Luzhou of Sichuan was identified nationally as the only
inheritor of this unique intangible folk culture category. CI-UNH has
invited Mr. Liufu Bi together with his wife who aids with the threading process
to demonstrate the making of this type of traditional umbrella on the Durham
campus from Jan 29th to Jan 30th. Three hundred families
have already signed up to participate in the making of one such umbrella at the
workshop with Mr. Liufu Bi. CI encourages those who are interested to
contact xin.mai@unh.edu to
sign up ahead of time. There is a $12 charge per umbrella.
Participants get to keep the umbrellas they paid for.
This
event is otherwise free and open to the general public.
