First Monday Talk

Under the Starry Flag:  How a Band of Irish Americans Joined the Fenian Revolt and Sparked a Crisis Over Citizenship

Lucy Salyer is an Associate Professor in the History Department and Justice Studies Program.  She will discuss her recently released book which recounts the gripping legal saga that ensued when forty Irish-American freedom fighters sailed to Ireland in 1867 to join the rebellion against British rule.  They failed to win Irish independence, but, instead, sparked an international conflict that dragged the United States and Britain to the brink of war and brought sweeping changes in the national and international law of citizenship.

If you plan to attend, kindly RSVP to humanities.center@unh.edu or 603-862-4356.  Thank you.

The Center for the Humanities hosts First Monday events at the Three Chimneys Inn in Durham.  These center around short, informal talks by faculty members, designed to give colleagues a window into their work.  We reserve time at the end for questions and conversation.
