Tackling Sustainable Intensification in Pasture
Pasture-based agriculture is a candidate for sustainable intensification, which aims to increase production from existing agricultural land areas while meeting social, environmental, and economic objectives. However, pasture systems are extensive and variable, with unexpected challenges assembling even basic datasets- e.g. how many animals are located where and when. Agroecosystem models can help connect pasture management to environmental outcomes such as soil carbon change and greenhouse gas flux, creating a framework to examine temporal and spatial variability in pasture-based landscapes. Dr. Campbell  will discuss the development of a variety of modeling approaches (and lessons learned) in New England and Brazil. She will also present a more global perspective on challenges with data limitations, and discuss how research in this field might advance.
