More about Emily’s research:
Soils contain twice as much carbon as the atmosphere and vegetation combined in the form of soil organic matter (SOM). Soil microbes (fungi and bacteria) are important agents of both SOM formation and destabilization, the latter often leading to the loss of carbon from soils as carbon dioxide. My research examines the microbial traits that favor SOM formation, with a focus on fungi. Understanding the factors that render soil microbes net SOM accumulators may make the management of soils for carbon accrual possible, with implications for climate change mitigation and soil fertility.
