Will Smiley is Assistant Professor in the Humanities Program (Dept. of Classics, Humanities, and Italian Studies). He is a historian of the Middle East, Eurasia, the Ottoman Empire, and international law.

What has international law, and especially the law of war, meant historically in the Middle East? Professor Smiley's First Monday talk will look at how the Ottoman Empire worked out the rules that transformed slaves into prisoners of war, and what this means for our understanding of international law today.

The Center for the Humanities hosts First Monday events at the Three Chimneys Inn in Durham.  These center around short, informal talks by faculty members, designed to give colleagues a window into their work.  We reserve time at the end for questions and conversation.
