Menotti’s genius is not only as a brilliant composer but also as a superb librettist. In these four “psychological” operas for which he wrote both words and music, Menotti explores the edges of the human psyche in extreme situations resulting in behavior heroic, ironic, compassionate and insanely destructive.
Seniors Susannah Thornton and Will Farrell shine in the twentieth century warning of the power of technology in The Telephone, Kerri MacLennan and rising freshman star Colin Geaghan present the poignant irony of their arias, “Steal Me” and “When the Air Sings of Summer”, as Laetitia and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief. Seniors Ruth George and Heather Guilfoyle present the eerie “Black Swan” and séance scene in The Medium. Lindsay Goldsmith and Eric Berthiaume offer the deep pathos, sacrifice, and dark comedy of the Kafkaesque insanity of The Consul. Other wonderful singers include Brett Branscombe, Madeleine Molleur, Catherine Carter, and Audrey Thompson. The program is directed by David Ripley with Elizabeth Blood at the piano.
