Zoltán Kodály's Missa Brevis will be the featured work on this year's program.

Following the success of the Brahms Requiem in the composer's score for 2 pianos in 2011, the work planned for 2014 is the Missa Brevis by Zoltan Kodaly, also in a score for 2 pianos and percussion. Kodaly is a hugely important figure in choral music of the twentieth century, as well as in music education in general, and the Missa Brevis is perhaps his most important large-scale choral work.

The Choral Gala is a combined concert with the UNH Concert Choir and student vocalists from area high schools under the direction of Prof. William Kempster.

UNH invites students from the area high schools to sing with the UNH Concert Choir on a major choral work with orchestra on a designated Saturday each January. During the evening performance, high school choruses also have the opportunity to perform as individual school choirs or chamber groups. For the combined choral work, Dr. Kempster provides scores to the high school students in advance of the concert. On the day of the performance, the students participate in sectional rehearsals and hold a full dress rehearsal prior to the concert.

The Choral Gala is a large and vibrant event. Nearly 300 performers participate to large and enthusiastic audiences. Past galas have included Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Berlioz’ Te Deum, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, and Mozart’s Requiem.
